A German national, Axel holds a PhD in Political Sciences from the Free University Berlin, Germany.
He joined the European Commission in 2013. In 2021, he was appointed the Deputy Head of Unit for Sustainable & Intelligent Transport at DG MOVE. The Unit is responsible for policies on sustainable and smart mobility, including the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Directive, Clean Vehicles Directive, Intelligent Transport Systems Directive and related delegated acts as well as promotional policy initiatives in the field of renewable and low-carbon fuels and connected and automated mobility.
Prior to joining the Commission, Axel has held different positions in the public and private sector in Belgium, Denmark and Germany.
